DEFY Wood Stain Colors Guide (2026 Help & Selection Tips)
Choosing the right DEFY stain color is one of the most important steps in your project. DEFY wood stains are available in a range of semi-transparent colors designed to penetrate the wood while enhancing its natural grain.
This guide will help you understand each color option and how to choose the best one for your deck, fence, or exterior wood surface.
Important: How DEFY Stain Colors Really Look
Before choosing a color, keep this in mind:
- ✔ Final color varies based on wood type (cedar, pine, hardwood, etc.)
- ✔ Wood age and condition affect how stain absorbs
- ✔ New wood vs old wood will produce different results
- ✔ Prep quality impacts final appearance
👉 Always test a sample on your wood before committing
DEFY Stain Color Options
DEFY stain colors are consistent across most DEFY product lines, meaning the color itself does not change—only the formula and performance characteristics differ.

Hello,
We applied Defy deck stain cedar tore for the second time, however, this time the color is a very bright orange and dull looking, even after using the Defy cleaner and brightening. We bought the (4) 1 gallons since the 5 gallons was out of stock. Please see photos.
Hello, that is the correct color for the Defy Cedartone color. For additional help, contact SaverSystems directly as we do see that you ordered from us.
Which color has the least amount of orange other than driftwood?
Butternut, but colors will vary based on wood type and age of the wood.
Good morning – we stained boardwalk and covered porch three years ago and loved the result. Time to do it again and I accidently ordered a gallon of light walnut, still have 1 gallon of cedar tone. Can I mix these? Thanks
Yes, you can.
I have a deck that was previously painted by former owners and I powerwashed and sanded but couldn’t get all the paint off completely. I used the ultra semi transparant on the stairs and it didn’t lok very good. Can I now apply the solid color over the transparent stain to make it look better? I will eventually replace the stairs but want to do something to get by for awhile. Thanks
Yes, you can.
Thank you
Is there an option for your products to ship to Canada? amazon.ca carries you but with limited choices.
You can order direct from our website with shippping to Canada at checkout.
Grey came out too light and too dark in some sections. How can I correct.
Also, what can I use to remove dried stain from siding? Tried everything to no avail.
To fix the uneven application, you would need to remove and start over. Use the Defy Stripper and then the Defy Brightener.
Try a graffiti remover cleaner like Goof Off to remove the stain from the siding. Test spot first.
Is the Butternut option yellow, orange or red in tone at all? I’m looking for the most brown shade of brown, 😉 leaning toward cooler tones for new pine, pt decking and possibly some douglas fir. Some reviews stated the Light walnut was a bit orange.
The final color varies drastically based on the wood type, age of the wood, how it is prepped, etc. so we cannot answer this properly. Best to test samples on your wood.
can Defy Extreme semi transparent stain be tinted? i purchased driftwood grey and tested it. it turned out more brown on my old PT deck. I would like the color to have more of a blue/grey tone. is there anything I can add to the stain to change the color?
No, you cannot tint it.
Can I add transtint? Looking to change the color a bit for second coat. Thanks
You cannot tint the Defy Stains.
I just used an oil on my porch swing. Can I use the extreme oil stain over it?
No, you would have to remove this first.
Hi We plan to stain a front porch cedar log railing. We are in the adirondack mountains in new york – the railing is about 10 years old and is subject to mold, pollen and mildew . We have totally cleaned and scraped and sanded the wood (cedar) and are interested in your extreme stain product. (We used an oil product before and think that was part of our problem). We do not want an orangy or dark color so that leaves us with the pine color.. Is there a chance we could see a sample of that color – maybe on small piece of wood? Or can you send a small product sample to try? I don’t trust internet picture to be accurate. Or if you know a local application – we are near Lake Placid and Saranac Lake NY – we could see. We have spent many hours preparing this railing and want to be certain the stain will give us the color we want. thanks Judy Havill
Colors vary based on wood type so best to test on your wood: https://www.deckstain.com/defy-stain-samples.html
I got a sample of the defy extreme light walnut. I applied a coat on a sample piece of wood and really liked the color. Then I applied a second coat and did not care for the color as much because it made it quite a bit darker. I’m planning to apply this on a fresh redwood gate/small fence and wondering if I can just use one coat since I preferred the lighter color that produced.
Yes.
Do you sand surface before or after brightener applied
If you are sanding, then do this first and brighten after.
Ia Defy Transparent stain effective on composite decking?
It is not.
I have a mahogany deck and cant find any color charts that show the different tones over mahogany
Thre are not any color charts but we do sell samples for testing on your wood.

We have an approx. one year old, 400 square foot cedar deck. It is prepped and ready for staining. I saw the video that the process for 2 coats is wet on wet. I guess I don’t understand how to put on the second coat if the first coat is still wet. Won’t the footprints show if we walk on the wet part?
https://www.deckstain.com/what-is-wet-on-wet-stain-application/
I just applied Defy, grey, over aged but freshly sanded pine. The color is completely inconsistent despite my shaking and mixing multiple containers of stain. Some boards are grey, others look wet like chapstick has been applied but zero grey. How do I make the color consistent? Can I put a 3rd coat on after #2 has dried? I have used Defy before on a different deck with zero issues. Help!
You cannot add more as it will not take. You will have to remove and start over. Strip and brighten for prep.
Thanks for the quick response. Sanding was an unpleasant experience the first time and I would prefer to not do it again. If I were to paint the deck now, what steps are necessary to treat the current coating of Defy stain I just applied? Thanks
Strip and brighten for prep.
I have treated pine decking. Never stained. I got mill glaze (fuzzies) that came on some boards after I applied a cleaner Cabbot. Never applied the Cabbot stained. Two MI winters later I am ready to stain. Questions: 1-what brand cleaner and brightner to use? 2-Do I sand just the boards that now have mill glaze, or could I have some more mill glaze after applying new cleaner? 3-Sand after cleaner and before brightener? Or after cleaner and brightner? 3-What grit sandpaper to use? 4-two coats of your product or one? 5-when time come to reapply your product years alter what do I use for prep? simple cleaner? powerwashing and then repplication? Or would I have to strip off the old defy product?
Clean and brighten for prep. Only sand if needed and that would be after the cleaning.
So to confirm, if needed, sand after the cleaning and BEFORE applying brightner? OK, so does that mean then that I’ve got to let the wood dry for several hours… after cleaner … sand, (if I see the fuzzies), then apply the brightner and wait a day before applying the product? Thank you.
Correct.
I bought a sample of your Driftwood Gray stain to try on an extra board from our pressure treated decking. The wood is over 6 months old, has the orange coating from pressure treatment. Do I need to use any additional product on the sample board to get an accurate idea of what my deck will look like with the gray stain?
Clean and brighten the wood just like you will have to do with the deck prior to staining.
Are you saying I need to buy another product to brighten and clean a sample?
Correct and you need this for the deck as well for prep.
I presently have a blue solid stain on our cedar shingles which is peeling on 20% of the total surface. I do not want to strip the present blue stain. However, I would like to put on a layer of Semi-transparent driftwood gray over the the total surface of both solid stain and scrapped bare cedar wood with the idea of antiquing the house surface. Could this work? Will the transparent stain adhere to the solid stain?
No, that is not possible.
I am staining redwood deck. Do I use stain for hardwoods?
That or the Defy Extreme stain. Either would work.
I have a cedar shingle house with a gray-blue solid stain. I have 35% peeling after scraping the house in preparation for new stain. I would like to go with a semi-transparent driftwood gray from Defy but not sure of the coverage and final appearance since I have both stripped cedar and blue solid stain to blend together. May I have a sample of your driftwood gray to test on my house? Thank you, ken
You cannot apply the Defy over the old stain. It will need to be removed 100% and that would require media blasting.
Is Defy Extreme a stain and sealer? Is it oil based? My neighbor stained his side of our new cedar wood fence and some dark stain is seeped through the knot holes on the back of the fence. Can we use Defy stain over the spots on our side now? I don’t know the stain brand he used.
Defy is a stain and also seals the wood. It is water based. Without knowing the other stain brand and type of stain, it is not possible to answer your last question.
I need to stain my cedar shingles, what is the best DEFY product for that?
The Defy Extreme Stain: https://www.deckstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains.html
I stained my 2 yr old treated pine deck last summer using Behr Premium Weather Proofing Wood Finish. After learning of your product, I would like use your Extreme. Do I need to strip the deck or can I just use a cleaner then apply the Extreme?
Fully remove the Behr by stripping and sanding. Brighten last.
Can you add a small amount of butternut semitransparent stain to the natural pine to cut the yellow ness of the natural pine color?
Yes, you can do this.
I have been reading about the pressure washing the wood. Do you mean to actually use a pressure washer? I have read that it could damage the wood. If I would use a pressure washer would it just be like not real close up but just spray with a wide nozzle from around 2 ft from surface? Just nervous…ty
You can use a pressure washer while using the Defy Cleaner or Defy Stain Stripper. You wash 6-12 inches away from the wood so it does not damage the wood.
I am ready to stain our front porch after sitting for 6 months. This is new pressure treated wood pine I believe. I need a list of what I need to do from beginning to end. Thank You
I live in southern Illinois close to St. Louis area so high humidity in summer so we want to get started before the heat hits. Thank You
Use the Defy Cleaner and pressure washing for prep. Defy Brightener after. let dry and apply one coat of the Defy Extreme Stain. Any color that you like.

We have a new deck (6 months) – trex floors and wood railings. It’s ready for stain. How do I protect the trex? Thanks in advance.
See this about new wood: https://www.deckstain.com/prep-new-wood-for-defy-stains/
You will need to fully cover the trex with plastic or tarps.
I just put 2 coats of defy extreme in light walnut on pressure treated. My wife thinks it’s too orange. Can add a coat of butternut or should I sand again?
You would have to remove the stain you applied if you want to switch colors as adding more on what you have down will not work.
Resanding it or can/should I use a defy wood cleaner/stripper?
Defy Stripper and then Defy Brightener.
Hi, we stained a newly built (red) cedar deck 2 years ago with BM Arborcoat & it didn’t wear well. Most of the deck is in shade and we’re in CT with snowy winters. (The deck has an under deck drip system attached so we can sit on patio below it in bad weather.). Painter wants to do a solid stain but I’ve been researching and I think your product is what we need to try. I’d like the result to be a rich medium brown without the current purple hue (would love it to look like an indoor hardwood floor but I assume that’s impossible). We picked cedar to see the natural wood grain rather than a composite material & really want to enhance the look of the finished product. Do you have suggestions about which Defy product/color to use? Thank you!
You will need to 100% remove the BM first. Strip off what you can and then sand the rest off. Brightener goes on last. Once fully prepped, try the Defy Extreme in Butternut.
Thanks so much!
I just cleaned my cedar deck railing with a granulated, oxygenated bleach (Stain Solver) before I became aware of your products. The wood is clean and ready for staining. Can I now continue on with the next 2 steps using your products (wood brightener and stain)?
Post pictures.
Here they are.
These are the pictures after cleaning.
Yes, brighten and then stain.
Thank you.
I have an untreated red cedar outdoor table and bench that I’m hoping to preserve the natural color of the wood. The sanded unfinished appearance is very lovely, but I’m concerned that staining it with the cedar or natural color will give it a very deep red appearance. I would like to stay lighter. Any idea how butternut would look on red cedar wood? Too dark?
Best to order some samples as colors will vary based on wood type and age of the wood.
https://www.deckstain.com/defy-stain-samples.html
Could I get a very small sample of the Butternut and Light Walnut? I only need a small dab. You could even put it on a piece of wood (I have pressure treated pine boards on my deck). I am willing to pay for these. I just don’t want a whole bucket of the wrong color and can’t tell from the images on the screen.

We are re-staining our deck floor only and need help with picking a color that will match the rails as closely as possible. Was thinking Cedar Tone or Light Walnut would be the best choice. This picture is in the shade and the previous stain used was SW Cedar Bark. Thanks!
Light walnut.
Can u apply clear stain over a stain placed the day before? Iran our after my first coat of colored Stain, and want to put a coat of clear stain over it.
No, you cannot add a clear coat over a stain.
I just stained my new sauna and used the three-step process ending with a 2 coat of Natural Pine. My question is with this is in full sunlight most of the day how long will the stain last before I need to reapply? Also will the color fade just a tad after a new application? Also if I decide to change it to more of a brown color in the future well I need to strip it?
Probably about 2 years before needing to recoat. Strip it changing colors. Clean if doing the same color.
Does Defy make a semi-solid deck stain, and in what color tones? Thanks!
They do not come in semi-solid colors.
Can I use Defy extreme on old trex decking 2002?
Sorry but, no.
Will you ship 5 gal Defy Extreme to Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador)?
Yes, you can buy directly from the website.
Hello … I have selected your Butternut for my pine deck floor, posts and railing but I would like the balusters to be in a different color. Which color do you recommend to pair with Butternut? Thank you!
Any color that you like. That would be your preference.
Does Driftwood grey end up looking like pressure treated pine that has just been left untreated? If so, that’s not what I want. I want more of a true grey without going semi-solid or solid. The lake house has grey vinyl siding. Trying to decide between driftwood and hope the massive deck system kind of disappears or a total contrast with darker wood stain such as butternut. Plan on putting more of nautical look white roping. Any suggestions appreciated!
Driftwood looks like a stained semi-transparent gray tone.
If I used Olympic Maximum clear waterproof sealant can I use the extreme stain without having to sand entire deck? Thank you
No, you will have to remove it first.
I want to preserve the old, faded look of a fence with your driftwood gray color. If two coats are needed for the best protection, can I dilute the stain so that the color is not so heavy?
Sorry but no, it cannot be diluted.
Do you carry a Defy Extreme Deck stain solid coverage in a deep tint base so I could have it matched to a color of my choice
We do not.
I think I used to use a Defy stain called “Colorado Gold.” Which current color is closest to that? Thank you.
Use the same as before: https://www.deckstain.com/defy-original-synthetic.html
What is the difference between Defy Extreme semi-transparent and Defy Extreme 40 semi-transparent?
Defy Extreme 40 is LOW VOC for the LA are of California only.
Is there a way to add more color pigment of some sort to the Coastal Gray stain? It is turning the wood sort of greenish/gray from the sample I obtained. I would like something darker if possible
Sorry, but no you cannot tint it darker.
What color would you suggest I try mixing with butternut to make it more of a medium brown on my cedar deck? The cedar has an orang- red cast when wet.
It tends to go more red as it ages with a stain. It is sanded, cleaned and neutralized with your products. Also does the butternut have much red in it? Thank you in advance
Butternut is a medium to darker brown. Not red. To lighten you could use Natural Pine or Clear.
i WANT TO USE DEFY EXTREME BUT SINCE THE COLORS ARE LIMITED (COMPARED TO MOST OTHER BRANDS, FLOOD, bEHR, cABOT, OLYMPIC) , iD LIKE TO MIX TWO OR MORE OF YOUR COLORS IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE AS CLOSE A MATCH AS POSSIBLE TO MY HOUSE TRIM, ETC WHICH IS A TAUPE, (GREYISH BROWN). GARAGE DOORS, METAL WINDOW TRIMS, ALL ARE IN THIS COLOR FAMILY WHICH IS NOT GRAY AND NOT BROWN, BUT A MIX OF THE TWO.
THE BEHR COLOR WAS CHATHAM FOG AVAILABLE IN SEMI TRANSPARENT AND
SOLID STAIN.
i PREVIOUSLY CALLED YOUR COMPANY WITH THIS QUESTION AND IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT I FIRST TAKE MY PURCHASED GALLON OF DRIFTWOOD GRAY TO A PAINT STORE AND HAVE THEM MATCH IT TO A SAMPLE OF MY DESIRED COLOR, and if that didn’t work, to call you back.
I’M WRITING INSTEAD! PAYING $8/SAMPLE WOULD BE FINE BUT ID LIKE TO HAVE AN IDEA ON WHICH ONES TO MIX FIRST.
i ASSUME THAT WOULD BE AN EASY TASK FOR SUCH AN INCREDIBLE PRODUCT
LINE. I BOUGHT THE GALLON OF GRAY (LOOKED LIKE A CLOSE MATCH ON THE SAMPLE SWATCH AT THE STORE) AT OUR LOCAL FAIRFIELD,OH HARDWARE STORE. they do not match paint.
Your products would also be beneficial to our commercial properties, but often we are again trying to match previous inferior paint and stain colors.
THANK YOU

Try mixing Butternut and Driftwood Gray together.
